Renault has already announced that it will present the new Renault 5 100% electric at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, which will take place from February 26 to March 3, 2024.
Anticipated by the prototype clearly inspired by the original model of the iconic Renault 5, the 100% electric variant is based on the CMF-B EV platform, which will allow the French brand to reduce production costs by 30% compared to the Zoe, as the platform shares 70% of the components with the CMF-B platform used by the combustion engine Clio.
The French brand has not yet revealed many technical details about the fully electric Renault 5, but it has already announced that the new model will have an optimized chassis with a multilink rear axle (usually reserved for higher prestige segments) and a lower center of gravity with batteries installed under the floor guaranteeing greater dynamic performance. In addition, the engine will benefit from a new internal architecture, combining three main components: the DC/DC converter that converts the battery’s 400V into 12V; the battery charger; and a box that will manage the distribution of energy.
Another novelty is the new battery that will be used by the fully electric R5, which will contribute to giving the vehicle a competitive advantage. The change from the 12 modules seen in the ZOE battery to 4 large modules means that the architecture is simpler and 15 kg lighter.
The new Renault 5 E-Tech 100% electric will also be available with a range of advanced technologies. Inside the car will be Reno, the official avatar of Renault. This next-generation humanized co-pilot will provide a digital experience that «immerses» users in the Renault world, for new driving experiences on board the car.
In addition, the new electric model will be equipped with a bidirectional charger and will have V2G (vehicle-to-grid) technology. Supported by Mobilize, V2G technology allows the Renault 5 E-Tech 100% electric to supply energy to the distribution network. It will be available first in France and Germany in 2024 and then in the United Kingdom in 2025.
«The Renault 5 E-Tech 100% electric is a cult icon redesigned for modernity. We put maximum effort into creating this captivating car, designed and built in France. With a joyful style and state-of-the-art technologies, it will contribute to making electric cars more accessible in Europe,» emphasized Fabrice Cambolive, CEO of Renault.
