Lewis Hamilton demonstrated teamwork by allowing George Russell to overtake him during the Japanese Grand Prix. Mercedes’ struggles in the era of Formula 1 ground effect persisted in 2024, and the team was hopeful of scoring crucial points to remain in the championship hunt. Hamilton, recognizing his difficulties in moving up the standings due to tire temperature issues, made the decision to let his teammate pass to have a better chance of competing with the drivers ahead.
Hamilton consulted his radio engineer and asked if he should let Russell pass. The team agreed, and the 26-year-old driver had the opportunity to fight for a podium place in the Japanese GP. Hamilton acknowledged Russell’s superior performance and highlighted the understeer issues he was facing in his W15 car.
During the race, Hamilton continued to struggle in the Japanese GP, losing several positions even before making a pit stop. Mercedes opted for a long stint on hard tires from the start of the race, but this strategy did not bring favorable results for Hamilton and Russell. Both drivers were overtaken by their competitors, including Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc, further diminishing Hamilton’s hopes of a podium finish.
Despite the disappointing pace, Hamilton remains determined to secure some points in Suzuka. As a seven-time world champion, he will continue to work with Mercedes to maximize results throughout the 2024 season. The team will also make updates to the W15 car to unleash its full potential and allow Hamilton to compete at the front of the grid.
