Fernando Alonso arrived at Aston Martin this season, in an agreement that ends in late 2024. And, as far as the British team is concerned, renewal is an intended scenario, after a year of good performances marked by several podiums.
In a press conference transcribed on the FIA website, team boss Mike Krack was asked if the renewal with the Spaniard is a desire, to which he replied: ‘I think I don’t have an answer to that question. Yes, absolutely!’
The manager admitted that he was impressed with Alonso: ‘As a team, we were captivated from day one, actually until today. To be honest, I always thought that in the beginning it was a bit of a honeymoon phase, but I am very happy that we managed to extend the honeymoon phase. I think we received a remarkable team player, always constructive, especially when it was difficult.’
Krack then explained that it was in the tough moments that Alonso proved his qualities as a team worker: ‘When the car was competitive – or more competitive – it is obvious that it is easier to be constructive, but the true qualities came to the surface, and let’s take Mexico as an example, where it would have been easy for both drivers to go to the microphones and criticize the team, go against the team, and it would probably have been deserved. I think the true qualities of the team player’s personality of both drivers came to the surface at that time. And for me, that is one of the highlights of the season, as a team we managed to stay together during that time.’
