Max Verstappen believes that George Russell may have deliberately obstructed his lap during the qualifying session of the Canadian Grand Prix. The race in Montreal has always provided exciting on-track action for fans, with the circuit posing a challenge for drivers. In the second qualifying session, Verstappen and Russell had a tense moment.
Verstappen was on a fast lap during Q2 when he encountered Russell’s Mercedes. Unfortunately, Russell did not give enough space to the current world champion in time. This angered Verstappen, who expressed his frustration over the team radio. He firmly stated that Russell should have moved out of his way and even suggested that this was done intentionally to disrupt his qualifying lap.
Red Bull has been facing difficulties in the recent races and no longer has a comfortable advantage over the rest of the grid. This was evident in Montreal, as Verstappen and his teammate continue to struggle with the RB20 car. Verstappen specifically mentioned the lack of grip as a major issue during qualifying, leading to inconsistent performance. Meanwhile, Sergio Perez, Verstappen’s teammate, had a disastrous race and failed to advance from Q1.
It is clear that Red Bull needs to address the issues with the RB20 and find solutions. Despite Verstappen’s undeniable talent, a subpar car hinders his ability to achieve the desired results for the current world champions, especially as the competition heats up in Milton Keynes.
