Zhou Guanyu’s Bold Move: Ferrari Return, Multiple Offers, and a Race Against Time

Jacques Villeneuve Criticizes Zhou Guanyu’s F1 Presence: Questions Raised Over Merit Versus Sponsorship

Formula 1’s 2025 season is already heating up off-track, and Zhou Guanyu is at the center of the action! The Chinese driver, who found himself without a full-time seat after Sauber’s lineup shuffle, has made a stunning return to Ferrari as a reserve driver. But here’s the kicker—Ferrari wasn’t the only team knocking on his door.

Zhou’s F1 Lifeline: Ferrari and Beyond

Despite being edged out of Sauber’s plans, Zhou’s stock remains high. The 24-year-old has secured a crucial role with Ferrari, splitting reserve duties with Antonio Giovinazzi. But in a bombshell revelation, Zhou disclosed that multiple F1 teams had approached him before he inked his deal with the Scuderia.

“Then when the announcement was published, there were a few more teams that approached us,” Zhou admitted. “It’s nice because it gives me more opportunities, and I don’t have to rush. I want to make sure I pick the right project.”

Sauber’s Shake-Up: Zhou and Bottas Dropped

Sauber’s move to sign Nico Hulkenberg last April set the stage for a drastic overhaul, leading to both Zhou and Valtteri Bottas losing their seats. The Audi-backed outfit opted to bring in Formula 2 champion Gabriel Bortolero, signaling a fresh start for the team.

However, Zhou isn’t letting that setback define him. His sights are firmly set on returning to the grid once the new 2026 regulations take effect, and he has been in discussions with the Cadillac-backed F1 entry that could shake up the grid next season.

The Ferrari Connection and What’s Next

Zhou’s reunion with Ferrari isn’t just sentimental—it’s strategic. Having been a part of the Ferrari Driver Academy from 2014 to 2018, he understands the team’s inner workings. With Giovinazzi’s World Endurance Championship commitments and Oliver Bearman on loan to Haas, Zhou is positioning himself as Ferrari’s go-to backup in F1.

But the competition for seats is fierce. With teams constantly shifting their priorities, Zhou is well aware that he can’t afford to linger in a reserve role for too long.

Not Another Mick Schumacher Case?

Zhou has made it crystal clear—he doesn’t want to be stuck in a never-ending reserve role like Mick Schumacher, who was left in limbo at Mercedes before making an exit from F1.

“If I’m a reserve driver like he was doing, I think I have a limit of years,” Zhou stated. “Every time you wait, the longer you wait, the less hopes you have. I need to make sure I’m in a project where I have a real chance at a seat.”

A Race Against Time

Zhou’s ambition is clear: he wants back on the grid, and soon. He remains open to other motorsport avenues but insists that F1 is still his top priority. “I don’t want to be forever sitting around on the bench and just watching TV,” he emphasized. “We love racing, and at some stage, I need to go somewhere that I’m fighting for victory.”

With the 2026 regulations promising a new era of F1, Zhou is banking on the right opportunity to propel him back where he belongs—on the starting grid, battling for glory.
