Zhou Guanyu has had enough of the swirling rumors about his future in Formula 1. As the 2024 season drags on with lackluster results, the Chinese driver’s contract situation for 2025 remains uncertain, fueling speculation that his financial backing from China is the only reason he’s still in the sport. But now, Zhou is hitting back at these claims with a firm and direct response.
Speaking out for the first time against what he calls “stupid rumors,” Zhou didn’t hold back. The 25-year-old dismissed the notion that he’s only kept his seat because of sponsorship money, calling the rumors baseless and offensive. He also addressed the chatter about him being in talks with another F1 team for next season, clarifying that he’s had little to no communication with the team in question.
Despite acknowledging that such rumors are common in the high-stakes world of F1, Zhou made it clear that his focus is solely on proving his worth on the track. He emphasized that he and his management team are working tirelessly to improve his performance and secure a place in the sport based on merit, not money.
Zhou’s frustrations are understandable. Since joining Formula 1, he’s shown flashes of potential but has struggled to consistently deliver standout results. The 2024 season, in particular, has been tough, with Sauber failing to score a single point so far. Zhou recognizes the challenge ahead and remains determined to show his true capabilities in the second half of the season.
As for Sauber, the team is in desperate need of a turnaround. With a pointless streak that’s dragged on for far too long, the summer break offers a crucial opportunity for reflection and improvement. Zhou, for his part, is eager to help Sauber break out of their slump and prove that he belongs in Formula 1 for reasons that go far beyond financial backing.
