After a mentally exhausting season, Zhou Guanyu delivered a rare moment of satisfaction for himself and his struggling Sauber-run Alfa Romeo team at the Qatar Grand Prix. The 25-year-old Chinese driver crossed the line in eighth, earning valuable points and salvaging some pride for a team that remains rooted at the bottom of the constructors’ standings.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the race, Zhou reflected on a season fraught with challenges:
“Mentally, it has been a really draining season for me, for Valtteri (Bottas), and for the whole team. This was our best opportunity after an amazing Saturday performance, and we wanted to show what we can do.”
A Rare Glimmer in a Tough Year
Zhou’s points finish marked one of the few bright spots in a campaign defined by struggles for pace and reliability. Despite the odds, he expressed satisfaction with the team’s execution during the Qatar GP:
“Today’s race was very clean and executed well, I think. There is a lot of work done that people don’t see behind the scenes to just continue to be there every weekend, just hoping we will see a return. And today is the day.”
Future Uncertainty Looms
Zhou’s future in F1 remains uncertain, as he has no confirmed seat for 2025. However, his name has been linked to intriguing opportunities in the paddock:
- Ferrari Reserve Role: With Oliver Bearman moving up to Haas in 2025, Ferrari is reportedly considering Zhou for a reserve driver position. His familiarity with the Ferrari engine, which powers the Alfa Romeo, could make him an ideal fit.
- Cadillac’s 2026 Entry: Zhou’s connections with managerial figures involved in GM’s upcoming F1 program have fueled speculation that he could secure a seat with Cadillac when it enters the sport in 2026.
Renewed Spirit Amidst the Struggles
For Zhou, the chance to engage in genuine, competitive racing provided a much-needed morale boost:
“I have been missing this proper racing, wheel-to-wheel feeling for a while. I am just delighted to be able to do what I do best, which is race wheel-to-wheel and to be there, fighting for the top 10.”
Alfa Romeo’s Uphill Battle
Despite the rare points haul, Alfa Romeo’s position in the championship remains grim. With one race left in 2024, the Swiss-based team is likely to finish last. However, Zhou’s performance in Qatar offered a reminder of the potential that still exists within the team—and perhaps within his own career trajectory.
Whether Zhou’s future lies with Ferrari, Cadillac, or another venture, his resilience through a grueling season underscores his determination to remain a part of Formula 1’s competitive landscape.
