Zhou Guanyu experienced racial slurs from supporters after becoming the first-ever Chinese competitor in Formula 1. In 2022, Zhou Guanyu made history by participating in Formula 1, representing China. The 25-year-old driver commenced his career with Alfa Romeo, which is now known as Stake F1 team. Regrettably, Guanyu has recently disclosed the challenges he has encountered due to his Asian heritage, specifically on social media platforms.
In 2021, Zhou Guanyu signed a contract with Alfa Romeo while being a part of the Alpine driver academy. Shockingly, the Chinese driver received a considerable amount of racial abuse online. It is worth noting that these individuals who directed derogatory comments towards Guanyu were not even familiar with his professional journey.
Zhou Guanyu took a critical stance on this matter. Despite securing a commendable third position in Formula 2, the Chinese driver was still subjected to abusive behavior. Interestingly, Bearman, who did not rank within the top 10 of the F2 standings this year, received substantial support on social media for his Haas F1 seat. This discrepancy raises concerns regarding the racial bias prevalent within Formula 1.
Formula 1 has predominantly been dominated by white Europeans, resulting in minimal representation of diverse nations and ethnicities. Lewis Hamilton’s groundbreaking achievements have challenged this prevailing norm. Nevertheless, Zhou Guanyu emphasized that racial discrimination continues to persist within F1, affecting not only Chinese drivers but also individuals of other Asian nationalities.
Undoubtedly, no individual should endure racism and discrimination. It is disheartening to witness Zhou Guanyu being subjected to such derogatory comments. However, lasting change can only occur if individuals collectively oppose racism. Fans are hopeful that F1 will address Guanyu’s concerns and take measures to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
