Zane Smith, the 25-year-old NASCAR prodigy, is making his return to Front Row Motorsports (FRM), the team that helped him secure the 2022 Truck Series championship. While Smith’s comeback is a tale of resilience, it comes on the heels of a tumultuous chapter marked by betrayal, dashed hopes, and a surprising turn of events.

A Promising Start with Trackhouse Turns Sour

Smith entered the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season with Trackhouse Racing, piloting the No. 71 Chevrolet under a partnership with Spire Motorsports. As a rookie, Smith delivered a respectable performance, securing four top-10 finishes and two top-five results, earning an average finish of 23.194 across 36 races. Despite his steady growth, Smith’s time with Trackhouse came to an abrupt and shocking end during the silly season.

Trackhouse Racing, led by Justin Marks, opted to prioritize Shane van Gisbergen for the 2025 season, leaving Smith out in the cold. Reflecting on the betrayal, Smith revealed:

“I didn’t know there were other options. If I had known that what we decided to do wasn’t going to work out, that certain promises weren’t going to be kept, obviously that would have changed things.”

Front Row Motorsports to the Rescue

With no other Cup Series offers on the table and a dwindling sense of opportunity, Smith turned to his former team, Front Row Motorsports. However, FRM was embroiled in a high-stakes NASCAR lawsuit over a charter dispute with Stewart-Haas Racing and 23XI Racing, casting doubt on whether the team could secure its position on the grid.

Despite the legal uncertainty, FRM team owner Bob Jenkins reached out to Smith, paving the way for his return. Smith recounted the emotional moment:

“I feel like I’ve lost three years of my life this year. When I was let go, it was a weird situation and life isn’t always fair, but it wasn’t fair. I got a text from Bob asking if I was set for next year, so I told him, ‘As a matter of fact, I just got fired.’”

What initially seemed like a conversation about the Truck Series quickly turned into a lifeline for Smith’s Cup Series career. Within a week, Smith signed with FRM, solidifying his place in the 2025 season.

Overcoming Adversity and Finding Redemption

Smith’s journey to reclaim his Cup Series seat wasn’t without hurdles. The charter lawsuit added tension to an already chaotic situation, leaving Smith questioning whether he could catch a break.

“Once FRM and 23XI filed the lawsuit, I thought, ‘Man, I can’t catch a break here.’”

However, the legal battle ultimately resolved in FRM’s favor, allowing the team to secure Smith’s return. Now, as he prepares to take the wheel once again, Smith is determined to make the most of this second chance.

A Fresh Start for 2025

Smith’s return to Front Row Motorsports offers a sense of redemption and stability as he reclaims his place in the Cup Series. With a proven team and a renewed sense of purpose, Smith has the opportunity to rebuild his career and chase the success that once seemed out of reach.

As the 2025 NASCAR season looms, all eyes will be on Smith as he embarks on this new chapter, ready to turn adversity into triumph and prove that he belongs among the sport’s elite.
