Zane Maloney Impresses on Formula E Debut in Brazil: A Confidence Booster Amid Chaos

Bajan rising star Zane Maloney made an impressive statement on his Formula E debut in São Paulo, showcasing his raw talent and adaptability despite a chaotic race environment. Racing for the newly-returned Lola Yamaha ABT team, Maloney finished 12th out of 14 finishers after a challenging yet promising curtain-raiser that was ultimately won by Mitch Evans of Jaguar.

While expectations were understandably modest for both Maloney and the British squad, the young driver’s performance offered glimmers of potential for the season ahead. Reflecting on his maiden outing, Maloney spoke of the confidence gained:

“Of course, there weren’t many expectations coming into this weekend, but I’ve gotten good confidence from this race,” Maloney said. “It was important to finish and get good experience for me and the team.”

Penalty Thwarts Potential Points Finish

At one point, Maloney’s stellar drive had him running as high as fifth, a remarkable achievement for a rookie debuting with a brand-new manufacturer. However, his race momentum was interrupted by an overpower drive-through penalty, which dashed hopes of scoring points.

“I think we had a plan coming into the race, a strategy. We executed it well,” Maloney explained.
“We were in the top five at one point with the attack mode, which was nice. I honestly think good points were on the cards this weekend. The drive-through penalty came at the worst time and obviously ruined the race for us.

Despite the setback, Maloney was realistic, acknowledging the steep learning curve for a new manufacturer:
“It’s expected for a new team to have these sorts of problems. We’ve learned hundreds of things this weekend, and I’m confident we’ll implement them in Mexico.”

Overcoming a Lack of Pre-Race Experience

What made Maloney’s performance all the more impressive was the revelation that he had never completed a full race simulation prior to the event. His longest stint in the car during testing amounted to just five laps.

“This is the first time I’ve ever done more than five laps in a row pushing a Formula E car,” Maloney admitted. “To have the result we did and the pace we showed, I’m excited for the future.”

Looking Ahead: Mexico City and Beyond

While Maloney remains grounded, his debut suggests Lola Yamaha ABT has a foundation on which to build. With valuable lessons learned, both the team and Maloney are confident of further progress as the season unfolds.

“I’m not saying we are now going to go and win races—that’s not going to happen—but we’ve learned so much,” he said. “Once we implement these learnings, we’ll be in good shape to keep moving forward through the season.”

Maloney’s adaptability, pace, and resilience under pressure have made him a driver to watch in his rookie season. With the next race scheduled in Mexico City, all eyes will be on the young talent to see if he can convert potential into tangible results.
