Zak Brown Sets Sights on World Champion for McLaren’s Le Mans Comeback

McLaren’s big return to Le Mans in 2027 is already causing a stir, with Zak Brown eyeing a world champion to lead the charge. The Woking-based team is gearing up for a full works entry in the hypercar class, aiming to replicate their 1995 victory with the iconic McLaren P1.

Fernando Alonso, a two-time Le Mans winner, is on Brown’s radar to spearhead McLaren’s assault at the prestigious event. Brown didn’t hold back his admiration for Alonso, emphasizing his stellar track record and athleticism. “Alonso is one of the best, and I know that because he drove for us,” Brown stated emphatically.

Alonso’s previous triumphs at Le Mans in 2018 and 2019 make him a prime candidate for McLaren’s ambitious project. The prospect of seeing Alonso back in a McLaren cockpit has ignited excitement among fans and experts alike.

While no drivers have been officially confirmed for the Le Mans campaign, Brown’s endorsement of Alonso hints at a potential powerhouse duo for McLaren. The Spanish driver’s experience and proven success in endurance racing could be a game-changer for the team’s aspirations.

In response to the speculation, McLaren’s current driver, Oscar Piastri, shared his perspective on a Le Mans venture. Piastri, while acknowledging the allure of the iconic race, expressed his focus on excelling in Formula 1 before considering additional racing commitments.

The buzz surrounding McLaren’s Le Mans return showcases the team’s determination to make a mark in endurance racing once again. With Brown at the helm and Alonso in the spotlight, the stage is set for a thrilling comeback at Le Mans 2027.
