Zak Brown reflects on McLaren’s financial struggles when he became CEO in 2016

Zak Brown has played a crucial role in the resurgence of McLaren in Formula 1. He has been an integral part of the F1 landscape since its inception in 1966. The team, based in Woking, enjoyed great success until the 90s. However, their position in the pecking order declined significantly in the early 2000s, and they only managed to secure one driver’s championship before their performance deteriorated. Brown, the CEO of the team, reflects on his time at McLaren when they were struggling and describes it as a chaotic and worrisome period.

In the early 2010s, McLaren had a strong presence at the front of the grid, thanks to the talents of two exceptional drivers. These drivers, whose names have been omitted, achieved numerous victories and came close to winning a championship. With high morale within the team, they took a gamble in the 2013 season by implementing a new design philosophy for their car. Unfortunately, this decision turned out to be disastrous, marking the beginning of McLaren’s decline. They abandoned their previous powertrains in favor of a different option.

Subsequent seasons were marred by drivers expressing their frustration, particularly through memorable radio moments. Zak Brown took over as McLaren’s CEO in 2016, inheriting a team with a tarnished reputation. The fans, drivers, and staff were all dissatisfied with the team’s lack of progress. Brown faced immense pressure as the team was constantly burning through funds to keep operations running.

However, since the 2019 season, McLaren has been steadily climbing up the F1 hierarchy, reclaiming their position as a midfield team. This resurgence has attracted sponsorships and allowed them to assemble a team of engineers to support their technical development. During this period, the departure of former team principal, whose name has been removed, caused a significant shake-up within the team.

Brown explained how a new individual, whose name has been omitted, stepped into the role and helped propel the team forward. Despite initially believing that the team’s progress had stagnated, Brown now acknowledges that with the arrival of this person and subsequent reorganization, McLaren finds itself in a better position than ever before.

As a result of numerous improvements over the past decade, McLaren now finds itself in contention for the championship title, alongside an undisclosed competitor. If they were to secure the constructor’s title, it would be their first since 1998, highlighting the importance of various factors in the realization of their ambitions.
