Yuki Tsunoda’s shocking future with Red Bull: roles beyond a reserve driver await in 2026

Yuki Tsunoda: The Rising Star’s Unexpected Journey with Red Bull in 2026

In a shocking turn of events, Yuki Tsunoda, the Japanese racing sensation, is set to remain with Red Bull Racing beyond the tumultuous 2025 season, taking on an intriguing blend of roles that could redefine his career trajectory. After stepping in for the underperforming Liam Lawson, Tsunoda’s brief stint with the elite team has proven to be anything but smooth sailing, with a string of disappointing results leaving fans and critics alike questioning his future.

Despite the high expectations that accompany a seat in one of Formula 1’s top teams, Tsunoda’s performances have struggled to hit the mark. With most races ending outside the points and a mere 6th place finish in Baku marking his best result – alongside a respectable 5th in the Qatar Sprint – the stakes have never been higher for the 25-year-old driver. The pressure is palpable, and the path ahead is fraught with uncertainty.

Looking towards the future, Red Bull has made it clear that Tsunoda will continue his journey with the team in 2026, albeit in a different capacity. He will take on the responsibilities of a test driver and reserve pilot, but the young racer is eager to expand his horizons within the organization. In an exclusive interview with DAZN Japan, Tsunoda expressed his optimism and ambition: “There’s a possibility that next year I won’t focus solely on simulator work and being a reserve driver. I’ve heard there are several potential scenarios.”

The revelation comes in the wake of Tsunoda’s initial shock over not securing a race seat for the upcoming season. “I found out after the race in Qatar, and honestly, at first, it didn’t feel real,” he candidly admitted. “I had prepared myself for this possibility, but the news was different from what I had heard before, so it was a surprise.” However, his resilience shines through as he emphasizes, “When I was told I wouldn’t have a seat next year, it wasn’t like the world was ending. There was still Abu Dhabi, so I was just thinking about the next race.”

With 2026 on the horizon, Tsunoda is focused on reinvention and growth. “I’m only 25, so there’s still plenty of room for improvement. This is just the beginning. Perhaps it’s the end of a chapter, but I’m curious to see how I can grow from here,” he stated, hinting at a determined mindset ready to tackle whatever challenges lie ahead.

As Red Bull navigates its future, Tsunoda’s journey will be one to watch closely. Will he rise to the occasion and carve out a new identity within a powerhouse team, or will he become another footnote in the high-stakes world of Formula 1? One thing is certain: the racing community is eager to see what this young talent will unleash in the seasons to come.
