Yuki Tsunoda’s Resurgence: How Laurent Mekies is Igniting a New Fire at Red Bull

In a thrilling turn of events, Yuki Tsunoda has declared he’s found his footing under the watchful eye of Laurent Mekies, the new head honcho at Red Bull Formula 1. After a string of mediocre performances, the Japanese driver now feels he’s racing in the right direction, reminiscent of his days at Racing Bulls – a team that once nurtured his talent.

Tsunoda’s recent outing at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix marked a significant turning point. Amid the chaos of qualifying, the driver maintained his composure, clinching a spot in Q3. The crescendo of this weekend culminated in a spectacular P6 finish, his best result since donning the Red Bull colors. Notably, he outperformed Lando Norris, a critical strategic move for Red Bull as they strive to bolster Max Verstappen’s championship campaign by siphoning points off their competitors.

Despite Isack Hadjar being the frontrunner for a promotion to Red Bull Racing in 2026, insiders suggest that Tsunoda’s upcoming performances are crucial for his future. Helmut Marko has pointed out that the Mexican Grand Prix, set for the end of October, could serve as a pivotal benchmark, with both seats at the sister team, Racing Bulls, still up for grabs.

“I didn’t talk to Helmut or anyone from Red Bull after Baku,” Tsunoda stated, emphasizing the clarity of his objectives. “I’ve shown my capabilities in at least one strong race with P6. The performances in Q3 and points are becoming a regularity. It’s definitely heading in the right direction.”

After the summer break, Tsunoda has consistently scored points, finishing P9 in Zandvoort and P6 in Baku, although Monza proved to be a tougher challenge. Compared to the first half of the season, where he only managed to finish in the points three times, his recent consistency is a beacon of hope.

But what’s behind this newfound momentum? The answer lies in the strategic changes made at Red Bull, coupled with Mekies’ influence. The team has exhibited a heightened level of competitiveness recently, and Tsunoda’s car now mirrors Verstappen’s specifications since Monza, a move that has undoubtedly contributed to his improved performance.

The real game-changer, however, is Mekies himself. This French maestro has a deep understanding of Tsunoda’s needs from their shared history at Racing Bulls and is now leveraging that knowledge to reignite Tsunoda’s career. “Laurent has helped me tremendously. The set-up I tried two races ago was similar to what I used at almost every race at VCARB,” Tsunoda explained, revealing that he had overlooked this approach in the past, mistaking it for a default setting.

Mekies’ active involvement in reestablishing the ‘Racing Bulls feeling’ has provided Tsunoda with an essential confidence boost. “Laurent communicated to the engineering team that I used specific techniques to enhance performance on certain axles or while navigating specific corners. When I implemented those strategies in the Red Bull car, they actually worked,” Tsunoda said, expressing his satisfaction with the familiar feel of the car.

This remarkable collaboration underscores Mekies’ ability to translate driver feedback into actionable engineering adjustments, a skill that can be attributed to his solid technical background. Unlike his predecessor Christian Horner, Mekies can effectively bridge the gap between driver insights and engineering solutions, showcasing that even the most talented drivers require guidance to reach their peak potential.

Tsunoda candidly acknowledged this during a media session in Singapore, stating, “Without Laurent’s ideas, I wouldn’t have been able to come up with it myself. The relationship has always been excellent; it feels just like what I had at VCARB, just with different team logos!”

As Tsunoda aims to solidify his place within Red Bull, the stakes are higher than ever. “I’ll keep doing what I’m doing. I obviously want to show more, but I think those things will come naturally with my efforts,” he said, reflecting his growing confidence and understanding of the car. The thrilling sensations he experienced in Baku, devoid of luck, signal that he is ready to build on this momentum as the Singapore Grand Prix approaches.

With the pressure mounting and the competition fierce, all eyes will be on Tsunoda in the upcoming races. His resurgence under Mekies not only promises excitement for fans but could also reshape his legacy in the fast-paced world of Formula 1.
