As Formula 1’s driver market shook up ahead of the 2025 season, one of the most talked-about moves was Red Bull’s decision to replace Sergio Perez with the relatively inexperienced Liam Lawson instead of promoting Yuki Tsunoda, who had been the frontrunner in the team’s eyes for a potential spot.

Tsunoda, who has spent years working as Red Bull’s junior driver at Racing Bulls, was primed to take the step up after outshining Daniel Ricciardo and accumulating the majority of the team’s points in the 2024 season. However, in a surprising twist, Red Bull chose to give the seat to Liam Lawson, a driver who had only participated in 11 Grands Prix at the time of the decision.

With his future seemingly on the line after Perez’s axing and his long wait for a Red Bull promotion, Tsunoda’s reaction to missing out on the chance to race for the senior team in 2025 has sparked interest and speculation among fans and pundits alike. Yet, in a rather surprising revelation, the Racing Bulls star revealed that he harbored little anger or frustration over the decision.

A Calm and Focused Tsunoda: No Room for Anger

Speaking ahead of the F1 75 season launch at the O2 Arena, Tsunoda discussed his reaction to missing the coveted Red Bull seat, admitting that while the news came as a surprise, he wasn’t particularly upset.

“Last year’s things I’ve already kind of parked and put out of my head, to be honest,” Tsunoda said. “At the moment they officially announced it, I didn’t actually feel super angry or disappointed. Maybe I was prepared inside my head at some point. In the end, whether I’m at Racing Bulls, VCARB, or Red Bull, the things I have to do are the same.”

For Tsunoda, who has been with Red Bull’s development program for years, this level-headed response speaks to his maturity and professionalism. It shows that while he is undoubtedly disappointed not to get the promotion, he understands the decision and has no ill will toward the team.

Focus on What He Can Control

“I’ve just got to stick to what I’m doing. I understand why they chose Liam. It is what it is – there are things I can’t control. I’ll just keep focused on myself and try to prove myself more,” Tsunoda continued.

The Japanese driver’s mindset is one of self-improvement and dedication, reflecting his determination to keep pushing forward despite the disappointment. Tsunoda has learned to not dwell on factors outside of his control, instead concentrating on showcasing his abilities with Racing Bulls in 2025 and making a strong case for future opportunities in F1.

With his new teammate, rookie Isack Hadjar, Tsunoda will aim to prove his worth once again, with the 2025 season offering him the chance to demonstrate his growth as both a driver and a leader within his team.

While Red Bull made its decision for reasons only known to the team, Tsunoda’s commitment to refining his skills and staying focused on what he can control shows a level of professionalism that can only bode well for his career moving forward.

Tsunoda’s Journey Ahead

As Racing Bulls gear up for another season, all eyes will be on Tsunoda as he strives to prove that he is more than ready for the next step in his career, whether that be within the Red Bull family or beyond.
