Yuki Tsunoda Slams ‘Ridiculous’ 10-Place Grid Penalty in F1 Canadian Grand Prix

Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda has unleashed his fury over a contentious grid penalty that has shaken up the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver received a severe 10-place grid drop after overtaking Oscar Piastri during practice under red flag conditions, a decision that Tsunoda finds utterly “ridiculous.”

The controversy unfolded when Tsunoda was summoned to meet with the stewards before qualifying. The officials concluded that Tsunoda had breached regulations by passing Piastri following a red flag situation caused by McLaren’s incident at the final corner during FP3. As a result, Tsunoda’s penalty will see him demoted to the back of the grid in Montreal, starting from 11th place.

While Tsunoda acknowledges the overtaking maneuver on Piastri on the back straight of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, he argues that safety concerns justified his actions. Tsunoda expressed his bewilderment, stating, “Ten places, it’s ridiculous for me. I don’t know what they want me to do.”

The Japanese driver elaborated on his perspective, highlighting the potential danger posed by debris from Piastri’s damaged car. Tsunoda found himself behind Piastri as the Australian driver navigated the track with extensive damage, prompting Tsunoda to make a split-second decision to ensure his safety.

Tsunoda’s frustration was palpable as he reflected on the penalty’s impact on his race prospects. Despite showing promising pace and narrowly missing out on Q3 following Red Bull’s latest upgrade, Tsunoda lamented the setback, remarking, “It’s very frustrating.”

The grid penalty has dealt a significant blow to Tsunoda’s aspirations for a strong performance in the Canadian Grand Prix. Forced to start from the rear of the grid, Tsunoda faces an uphill battle to make up positions and salvage his race weekend.

The contentious incident has ignited debate within the F1 community, with fans and pundits weighing in on the stewards’ decision and its implications for Tsunoda’s season. As the Japanese driver prepares to tackle the challenges awaiting him on race day, the specter of the grid penalty looms large, adding an extra layer of drama to an already intense Grand Prix weekend.
