Yuki Tsunoda fights to avoid reserve status: will he secure his Formula 1 future?

Yuki Tsunoda’s Future in F1 Hangs in the Balance: Will He Sink or Swim?

As the 2026 Formula 1 season looms on the horizon, tension is mounting for Japanese driver Yuki Tsunoda. With only a few crucial weeks left to determine the fate of his racing career, the stakes have never been higher. The enigmatic world of Red Bull Racing has always been unpredictable, and this year is no exception. While other teams have solidified their driver line-ups, Red Bull and its junior team, Racing Bulls, remain in a state of flux.

Max Verstappen, the reigning champion, is the only certainty at Red Bull. But who will join him in the cockpit? The competition is fierce, with Tsunoda vying for a seat against Isack Hadjar, Liam Lawson, and Arvid Lindblad. Only three spots are available, and one driver will face the grim reality of being left behind. Tsunoda’s recent performances have been scrutinized, especially following a dismal showing against Verstappen. However, a glimmer of hope shone through in Qatar, where he showcased flashes of brilliance during qualifying and the Sprint race. But will it be enough to alter his trajectory?

Alan Permane, the principal of Racing Bulls, has acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the team’s future. “I have an idea, but it’s not yet definitive,” he confessed. This vague admission has only fueled speculation, with many insiders predicting that Hadjar will be elevated to partner Verstappen, potentially relegating Tsunoda to a backup role or worse – a year on the sidelines. Tsunoda himself has dismissed the notion of sitting out the season. “Honestly, I never even thought about that,” he declared emphatically. “I don’t know, but I have no plans for anything like that.”

Rumors have swirled about Tsunoda possibly remaining within the Red Bull family or even making a switch to Aston Martin—who will be powered by Honda engines starting in 2026—as a third driver. However, Tsunoda has categorically ruled out this scenario, stating that he has no intention of being a reserve driver, a position he finds unpalatable.

With just days left until the decision is made, Tsunoda’s future hangs precariously in the balance. Will he secure a seat, or will he be left to ponder his fate from the sidelines? As the clock ticks down, the motorsport world awaits the dramatic conclusion to this high-stakes saga.
