Young Star Connor Zilisch’s Promising but Abrupt NASCAR Cup Debut: A Sign of Future Triumphs?

Fans watch Red Bull Chevrolet driver Connor Zilisch (87) round turn 18 during the NASCAR Cup Series EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas on Sunday, March 2, 2025 in Austin.

Despite his optimistic eight words – “Hopefully, I’ll get another chance to do this again” – Connor Zilisch’s hopes of claiming the title of the youngest NASCAR Cup Series race winner came to a disappointing end at the Circuit of America. The 18-year-old driver, who had already claimed victory in the Xfinity race, found himself caught up in a collision on the track that wasn’t his own doing.

Zilisch’s initial race in the Cup Series echoed last year’s Xfinity race at COTA, where he found himself embroiled in a chaotic Turn 1 situation immediately after the green flag dropped. The young driver, steering the No. 87 Chevy, sustained damage to his vehicle early on but persevered, seemingly dodging a major setback. However, on Lap 55, teammate Daniel Suarez found himself in trouble, spinning out on the track. This led to a collision between Zilisch and Suarez’s No. 99 car, a situation Zilisch couldn’t navigate, bringing about an unfortunate end to his promising weekend.

The disappointment was palpable in Zilisch’s post-race interview, where he reflected on the unfortunate finish to his Cup Series debut. Despite the setback, Zilisch recognized the experience’s value, noting that his car was among the top five fastest cars in the second stage, and he had managed to climb from outside the top 30 to 14th.

The collision with Suarez’s car sent Zilisch’s vehicle crashing into the tire barrier at Turn 19, marking both drivers’ race end and giving Zilisch a 37th-place finish. This crash effectively ensured Joey Logano’s record as the youngest NASCAR Cup Series race winner, achieved at 19 years and 35 days old, remained intact.

However, Zilisch’s initial performance hinted that he might be the one to challenge this record in the future. Despite his debut ending in a crash, parallels can be drawn with Logano’s own early career, which also saw a series of crashes before his record-breaking victory.

Zilisch’s approach to racing against seasoned drivers stood out beyond his raw speed. He acknowledged the learning experience of racing against such experienced competitors, noting their calculated and intelligent strategies on the track.

The young driver’s talent was on full display during his Xfinity Series win on Saturday, his second in the series. Despite starting from the pole position and enduring a pit lane penalty that sent him to the back of the field, Zilisch skillfully made his way back to the front for the victory.

While Trackhouse Racing has yet to announce when Zilisch will have another shot at the Cup Series, his performance at COTA suggests we can expect more from this promising driver. His experience and desire for another chance were transparently conveyed in his statement, “I had an absolute blast driving through the field.”

As Zilisch’s career continues to progress rapidly, it’s clear that his determination remains unfazed by missing out on challenging Logano’s record this time. With his talent and ambition, there’s every chance that Zilisch could have another shot at the record in the near future.
