Rally Superstar Demands WRC Day-Length Rules Overhaul!

Rally sensation Kalle Rovanperä is shaking up the World Rally Championship (WRC) with his call for a major change in how rally itineraries are managed. The young driver is pushing for strict regulations to be implemented, enforcing a maximum duration for each rally day to prevent exhaustion and safety risks.

The issue came to light during the grueling Portugal rally, where drivers, including Rovanperä, faced a marathon 15-hour Friday itinerary. This extreme schedule left even seasoned drivers like Sébastien Ogier feeling utterly drained, with Ott Tänak comparing the experience to being “treated like animals.”

Rovanperä is now spearheading the demand for a clear rule from the FIA on the maximum allowable length of a rally day. He emphasized the importance of sufficient rest between demanding days, highlighting the need for a balanced schedule that prioritizes driver well-being.

While existing regulations outline the structure of WRC events, Rovanperä’s focus is on the crucial gap between the conclusion of one day’s activities and the start of the next. The safety-conscious driver believes that extended hours behind the wheel not only jeopardize driver performance but also clash with the FIA’s Road Safety campaign.

In Rovanperä’s view, the current practice of pushing drivers to their limits compromises safety standards and undermines the core message of road safety promoted by the FIA. Drawing parallels with past safety improvements, such as the ban on driving with punctured tires, the young Finn stresses the need for a more sustainable and safety-oriented approach in WRC events.

As the rallying community grapples with the physical and mental toll of relentless schedules, Rovanperä’s advocacy for change is gaining momentum. The rallying world waits with bated breath to see if his impassioned plea for revamped day-length rules will reshape the future of the sport.
