Wolff says that advances by Mercedes in Formula 1 in 2024 are offset by additional setbacks.

Wolff diz que avanços da Mercedes na Fórmula 1 de 2024 são compensados por contratempos adicionais.

The Mercedes AMG F1 W15 driver, George Russell, competed in the Chinese Grand Prix, which took place on April 19, 2024. The team principal, Toto Wolff, acknowledged that the progress made with the 2024 Formula 1 car had become irrelevant due to setbacks in other areas.

Although Lewis Hamilton had a strong start in the Sprint race, securing second place, his performance dropped during the qualifying session, resulting in a ninth-place finish. Meanwhile, George Russell finished in seventh place, well behind the leaders. Hamilton attributed his difficulties to an extreme setup in his W15 car, causing significant understeer.

Despite having inherent aerodynamic pressure that does not translate into lap time, Wolff recognizes that Mercedes cannot cling to the few positive moments. In an interview with ServusTV in Shanghai, he expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s performance and emphasized the need for improvement. He mentioned that they are hoping to bring something new to the race in Miami, but acknowledged that their current performance is not up to par, as they are falling behind both the Ferraris and Lando Norris.

Mercedes made significant changes to the concept of their car in an attempt to address the issues of the previous car. However, they encountered a fundamental problem at high speeds. Wolff highlighted their strength in the corners of Suzuka as evidence that they had made progress in addressing this issue. However, he admitted that improvements in one area were offset by weaknesses in other areas.

Wolff explained that, although they gained half a second in high-speed performance, they lost the same amount of time in low-speed situations. This brought them back to square one, and now they need to focus on improving overall performance. Wolff emphasized that they have a clear understanding of the problem and the necessary adjustments that need to be made. Their goal is to create a car that excels in both high-speed and low-speed situations.
