Wolff: Mercedes needs to try new things in every race due to the difficulties in F1 in 2024.

Wolff: Mercedes precisa tentar coisas novas a cada corrida devido às dificuldades na F1 de 2024.

Lewis Hamilton, British driver of the Mercedes AMG F1 W15, was seen in the pits during the Australian Grand Prix at the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne, Australia, on March 23, 2024. This race is part of the Formula 1 World Championship and is the third stage of the season.

Toto Wolff, the head of the Mercedes team, acknowledged that they need to “experiment at every race” to overcome the challenges they have faced with their 2024 Formula 1 car. The German team had a tough start to the season, with both drivers retiring from the race in Australia, marking their worst start since 2012. Despite the initial optimism regarding the redesigned car, both drivers were surprised by its inconsistent performance.

Lewis Hamilton, who was less than a tenth off the fastest time in the third practice session, ended up outside the top ten during qualifying, finishing in 11th place. Wolff revealed that Mercedes is puzzled by the sudden drop in pace between sessions, especially considering Hamilton’s positive feedback after the last practice session. The car went from being the best it has ever been in three years to being uncontrollable.

When asked about the reasons behind Hamilton’s variable performance in the car, Wolff admitted that they have no idea. With a team of two thousand five hundred people working on the car, split between the engine and chassis departments, they are analyzing all aspects but have been unable to identify the issue. The narrow performance window and external factors like the wind make it challenging to pinpoint the issue.

In an attempt to find a solution, Mercedes conducted tests during practice sessions, using a previous specification floor and trying aggressive configurations on Hamilton’s car. However, these changes had a negative impact on his performance. Wolff acknowledged that the team’s situation is so serious that they may need to experiment throughout the entire race weekend, not just during practice sessions. As their performance seems to worsen as the weekend progresses, they need to find a way to improve and reach the full potential of the car.

According to their data, the current performance of the car is not the best it can offer. This realization has led Mercedes to consider desperate measures to change their luck.
