Wolff: Mercedes continues to seek victories within the current rules of F1.

Wolff: Mercedes continua a buscar vitórias nas regras atuais da F1.

The head of the Mercedes team, Toto Wolff, has dismissed suggestions that the team is ready to give up on winning races in Formula 1, despite their recent struggles. Since the reintroduction of ground effect cars in 2022, Mercedes has been unable to replicate the remarkable success it enjoyed with eight consecutive championships. This season, they have only managed to secure a victory at the São Paulo Grand Prix and currently sit in fourth place in the Constructors’ standings. Despite facing “fundamental” correlation issues with their revamped car, there have been rumors that Mercedes could redirect their resources towards the 2026 regulations overhaul. However, Wolff made it clear that they are not willing to sacrifice the current season or the 2025 season. While catching up to Red Bull may be unlikely, Wolff emphasized that Mercedes is determined to keep fighting for wins and championships. He acknowledged that the current situation is unsatisfactory, with Red Bull leading the pack and smaller teams struggling for lower positions. Wolff reiterated that their ultimate goal is to be in first place, but they are currently focused on beating their direct competitors and learning from Red Bull’s success. Although 2026 represents a significant opportunity for teams to challenge Red Bull, Wolff expressed his desire for positive moments and an upward trajectory in the next 18 months.

Toto Wolff, chief of the Mercedes team, acknowledges that the global recognition of the Mercedes brand plays a role in their willingness to reverse the team’s performance decline before the introduction of new technical regulations. The FIA made an announcement in December stating that the 10 existing teams would be banned from working on future Formula 1 machines in 2024. As a result, Wolff was asked if a decision would need to be made at the end of this season regarding the interruption of development for the 2025 car once the ban is lifted. The Austrian responded by stating that, as Mercedes, they cannot completely abandon the current regulations and still expect to maintain their current level of success. He emphasized that this is not the ambition of the brand, their partners, or themselves. Therefore, he believes they should continue advancing and deepening their understanding of the sport. When the FIA establishes new regulations, just like in other aspects of Formula 1, Mercedes will start examining them, probably sooner.
