George Russell, pilot for Mercedes AMG in the Formula 1 World Championship, faced a setback during the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff revealed that concerns about Russell’s tires led to a pit stop that cost him a position in the race. Despite qualifying ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton, Russell decided to pit and switch to the Medium compound with 11 laps remaining. This move dropped him to seventh place, behind Hamilton. Wolff explained that leaving Russell on worn Hard tires would make him vulnerable to Sergio Perez’s Red Bull, who was making a comeback. The team decided to bring Russell in early to avoid this risk. Russell had no issues with the decision, as he was able to secure the extra point for the fastest lap of the race, earning an additional point for Mercedes in the championship. He acknowledged that the race was a bit lonely for him, but believes Mercedes has made progress in closing the gap with their rivals, especially Red Bull. Russell emphasized the need to keep working hard to improve performance and reduce the gap to the competition.
