Wolff denies that Mercedes is lacking anything despite the challenges in F1.

Wolff nega que a Mercedes esteja faltando algo apesar dos desafios da F1.

Lewis Hamilton, British driver of Mercedes AMG in the F1 W15 car, took part in the Formula 1 World Championship at the Australian Grand Prix in Albert Park, Melbourne, on March 23, 2024, during qualifying day.

Toto Wolff, head of the Mercedes Formula 1 team, denied that the team is facing difficulties as they seek to overcome their struggles at the beginning of the 2024 season. The team’s disappointing start to the current season continued in Australia, where both drivers failed to finish the race. Hamilton retired due to an engine failure after qualifying in 11th place, while Russell crashed on the final lap while chasing Fernando Alonso from sixth position.

Despite the team’s optimism during the winter regarding their enhanced car concept, Mercedes failed to achieve the desired results, resulting in their lowest score since 2012. However, Wolff believes that the team has learned valuable lessons from their recent setback, as they have identified and addressed possible reasons for their past failures under the current rules.

According to Wolff, the team resolved uncertainties regarding the suspension, gearbox support stiffness, and a vibrating steering column. However, there is a discrepancy between what they observe in the wind tunnel and what happens on the track. Wolff emphasizes that the lack of progress is not due to one person’s interpretation of the data or a closed environment. He sees an open and collaborative atmosphere where mistakes are acknowledged and addressed.

Wolff is confident that there is no specific area where Mercedes is falling behind its rivals, except for the correlation issue that has been identified. He believes that the challenges they face are related to the complexity of the car’s performance, which is difficult to detect. He compares this to an on-off switch, where the progress made by McLaren and Ferrari highlights the difference between last year and this year. He reflects on past races where Mercedes had a good start, leading in first and second positions, and acknowledges the need for deep introspection and effort to overcome the current difficulties, which he describes as brutally painful.

The third Mercedes vehicle with ground effect technology showed moments of potential during certain sessions in the first three stages, but ended up falling short when it mattered most.

When asked about a possible lack of understanding of the current rules, Wolff stated that the car’s performance is determined by a combination of fundamentals and variables. The variables include the aerodynamic effects on the car and the mechanical adjustments made. However, the main performance is established at the factory, and the adjustments made on the track can only improve or harm it.

Although Wolff has acknowledged that Mercedes has not yet fully mastered the fundamental aspects, he emphasized that the W15 has the potential to be a strong contender in races. He maintains his belief in the capabilities of the car, despite recent setbacks.

During the last weekend, Wolff had a positive impression of the car’s performance. He still holds this belief, stating that there is a quality car within the team. However, there were moments throughout the weekend, including the last two sessions, where Mercedes was competitive in terms of performance, only to lose ground later on.

During qualifying, Mercedes finished in third place, just behind the leaders. However, their race pace fell short compared to McLaren and Ferrari, who were consistently faster throughout the weekend. Mercedes struggled to find an answer to the superior speed of their rivals.
