Former President Donald Trump once again pointed the finger at Japan for not having a reciprocal practice in the automotive sector with the U.S., advising that it should increase its imports of energy resources and other goods from the U.S. to help reduce the U.S. trade deficit.
In an interview with “Fox News”, Trump emphasized that the Japanese automotive sector “does not accept vehicles produced in the U.S., and yet they bring millions and millions of cars to the United States. It’s not fair, and I explained this to Japan, and they understand”.
It is worth noting that the Tokyo government is trying to find a trade agreement with the U.S. administration so that Washington exempts Japanese automotive companies from the 25% tariffs that are harming Japanese production. Additionally, Japan also faces a reciprocal tariff of 24% starting July 9, unless it can negotiate an agreement with the U.S. in the coming days.
The Japanese automotive sector accounted for about 28% of the goods exported by Japan to the U.S. in 2024.
