Winter Blues? Shane van Gisbergen Escapes American Chill for New Zealand’s Warm Embrace

For Shane van Gisbergen, the off-season is proving to be anything but relaxing. While most NASCAR drivers spend the break unwinding, the New Zealand native is grappling with the stark contrast of American winters and a gnawing sense of restlessness. After two seasons in NASCAR and Xfinity, SVG is still adjusting—not just to the high-octane competition but also to life off the track in the colder months.

“This Time of Year Sucks”: The Kiwi Driver Battles the Chill

In a candid conversation with Speedcafe TV, van Gisbergen didn’t hold back about his struggles with American winters. Used to New Zealand’s milder climate, SVG admitted the cold has taken a toll on him. “This time of year sucks here,” he remarked, adding that the freezing temperatures have compounded the monotony of the off-season.

Van Gisbergen thrives on the relentless grind of the racing calendar. The rhythm of weekly races gives him purpose, and the sudden pause has left him feeling out of sync. “It’s pretty brutal racing every week, but it’s awesome,” he shared. Without the adrenaline rush of the track, life feels stationary—a stark contrast to the fast-paced schedule he’s accustomed to.

Homeward Bound: A Return to Roots and Racing

Fortunately for SVG, a much-needed escape is on the horizon. “I’m looking forward to getting back to New Zealand next week,” he revealed, his voice tinged with excitement. The thought of warmer weather, familiar faces, and reconnecting with family offers a silver lining to his winter woes.

Van Gisbergen plans to participate in spring racing competitions in Auckland, a return to his roots that promises not only physical rejuvenation but also emotional warmth. “Seeing my dad over there” is a highlight he’s eagerly anticipating, underscoring the importance of family in his life.

SVG’s Stellar 2024 Season and What’s Next

Despite the off-season blues, van Gisbergen has plenty to reflect on—and build upon. His 2024 campaign saw him notch three Xfinity wins and maintain an average finish of 22.9 in the Cup Series. With fans eager to see what he’ll bring to the table in 2025, this break, however challenging, might just fuel an even stronger comeback.

The move back to New Zealand isn’t just about escaping the cold; it’s about finding balance. For SVG, the off-season isn’t a vacation—it’s a chance to reconnect, recalibrate, and refocus. With spring racing and family time ahead, van Gisbergen is poised to return to the track stronger than ever.
