Williams Struggles in Austria as Soft Tires Pose Major Challenge: Albon and Sainz Concerned

Struggling Start for Williams in Austria Grand Prix Practice Sessions

The Austrian Grand Prix weekend kicked off with a challenging start for the Williams team as they faced difficulties with the softer tire compounds during the practice sessions. Albon and Sainz found themselves struggling to extract the desired performance on the faster but less durable tires, setting the stage for a tough qualifying session.

Despite a strong start to the season with points in seven out of the first eight races, Williams has faced a downturn in form in recent events, scoring only a single point in the last two Grand Prix races. The trend seems to be continuing at the Red Bull Ring, with both cars struggling for pace, especially during the FP2 session.

Albon and Sainz finished the afternoon session in 16th and 17th positions, respectively, highlighting the team’s difficulties with the softer tire compounds. Both drivers expressed concerns about the car’s performance on the softer tires, indicating a need for improvement ahead of qualifying.

“We are a bit confused,” Albon admitted after Friday’s sessions. “Things are not going terribly, but they are not great either. We need to understand the wind change. We know that we don’t like certain types of wind, which may have affected us unfavorably. Also, we are good with the harder compounds, but it seems that when we put on the soft tires, we slip back. We need to understand this. We will have to experiment a bit in FP3. The track on Saturday should be much hotter, which means we start from scratch anyway. I am still confident; if we can make the tires work, I think we should have a good race pace.”

Sainz echoed similar sentiments, saying, “Overall, I think our performance has been encouraging, despite the times in FP2. We had some trouble putting together a lap with the soft tire, but I felt very competitive with the mediums and hards. Compared to other teams, we struggle to maintain grip during a lap with the softer tire. We will address this aspect carefully. Our race pace looks good, so we will try to find answers for the softer compound and improve throughout the weekend.”

As the Williams team grapples with tire management and performance issues, all eyes are on them to see if they can overcome these challenges and deliver a stronger showing in the upcoming sessions and the race itself. Stay tuned for more updates as the Austrian Grand Prix weekend unfolds.
