Alex Albon and Williams have rolled the dice at the Singapore Grand Prix, debuting a significant upgrade package that could redefine their season. The British-Thai driver is the only one running the latest version of the FW46, with teammate Franco Colapinto sticking to the older-spec car. The upgrades—featuring updated front wishbones, track rod and pushrod geometries, and changes to brake duct surfaces, boot panels, and chassis leg fairings—mark a critical step in Williams’ pursuit of mid-field supremacy.
However, Albon admits the new package is an “unknown” at the notoriously unforgiving Marina Bay Circuit, a track that has historically not suited Williams. The team’s struggles on street circuits are no secret, making this weekend a high-stakes testing ground for the upgrades. Albon finished eighth and ninth in the first two practice sessions, hinting at potential, but he remains cautious about the gains.
“It’s all come together quite well, but it’s still a bit of an unknown,” Albon confessed. “Honestly, I don’t think Singapore has ever been a strong track for us, so it’s more about experimentation. We’re using this weekend to understand the upgrades and see what we can learn for the rest of the season.”
The latest evolution of the FW46 arrives after a successful yet short-lived performance boost at Zandvoort, where Albon made it into the top 10 before a technical disqualification. Williams has scored 12 points in the last two events, climbing to eighth in the Constructors’ standings and putting them within striking distance of Haas.
While Albon acknowledges that the upgrades are better suited to street tracks, he’s realistic about what they can deliver at Singapore. “We’re not sacrificing this weekend, but it’s about trying different things. It’s a learning opportunity more than anything,” he explained. The hope is that what Williams learns here could pay dividends in the upcoming races, especially on circuits that align better with the new package.
Williams is not just looking for a quick fix but is laying the groundwork for a stronger finish to the season. As the team inches closer to their rivals, this weekend’s data will be crucial in shaping their approach for the final rounds. The spotlight is on Albon to extract every ounce of performance from the upgraded car, as Williams looks to build on recent momentum and continue their climb up the grid.
