Hendrick Motorsports’ was arguably the most deserving driver to clinch the championship in 2023 as he had his finest season ever with six race triumphs and consistent performance. He has proven that his performance in 2023 was not a coincidence by starting the 2024 season strong, emerging victorious in the Daytona 500, and putting an end to HMS’ ten-year winless streak in the event.
Speaking after the race about his win, Byron mentioned that it is remarkable to come from a background in sim-racing and triumph in the Great American Race. He dedicated his incredible victory to his father, who unfortunately couldn’t attend the event due to illness. Byron added that winning the same event he watched from the stands a few years ago holds a special significance.
Byron managed to survive two major incidents late in the race, which only saw five cautions throughout the day. This made it one of the cleanest Daytona 500s in the past two decades, since 2004. He and his teammate, who finished in second place, played crucial roles in the two crashes that had a significant impact on the race, including the big one with eight laps to go that involved 22 cars, including several contenders.
The end of a ten-year drought is not the only reason why William Byron’s victory is special for HMS. Monday marked the 40th anniversary of the Chevy Giants, and winning the 500-mile event on that day is more than just special.
When discussing the same, their Hall of Fame team owner mentioned that the way Byron’s victory came on Monday is like a perfect script that could have been written about HMS’ growth. He admitted that when he entered the sport, he felt out of place, and now the wins and records make it an incredible experience.
