Team Penske’s Will Power is poised for a thrilling showdown in the NTT IndyCar Series season finale at Nashville Speedway, starting from fourth on the grid. But with a 33-point gap to championship leader Alex Palou, the Australian driver knows he’ll need every advantage he can muster to claim his third title.
Power, while hoping for pole, was handed an unexpected boost as Palou faltered in qualifying. The Chip Ganassi Racing star, who leads the championship, not only struggled on track but will also be hit with a nine-place grid penalty for an unapproved engine change, pushing him back to 24th on the starting grid for the 206-lap race.
This opens a significant opportunity for Power, who will be starting 20 positions ahead of his rival. However, he remains realistic about the challenge ahead, knowing that his task is twofold: race his way to the front and hope that Palou remains trapped in the midfield, unable to claw back crucial points.
“We’re just gonna do our thing tomorrow and hopefully have great cars in the race,” Power said after qualifying. “I couldn’t do any more than I did in qualifying there. That’s all it had. Obviously, it wasn’t good enough for pole, but we’ll attack tomorrow. It’ll be what it’ll be, and whoever wins deserves it.”
With Palou needing to fight his way through traffic and Power focused on maximizing every opportunity, Sunday’s finale promises to deliver high-stakes drama as both drivers aim to close out the 2024 season in triumph. For Power, a strong result paired with Palou’s potential struggles could be the recipe for a stunning comeback in the championship battle.
