Rookie Racer’s Wild Ride at Long Beach Grand Prix
Long Beach, California – A rookie racer, Robert Wickens, faced a tumultuous day during his GTD debut at the Long Beach Grand Prix. Wickens, behind the wheel of the No. 36 DXDT Racing Corvette Z06 GT3.R, encountered various challenges that took him on a roller-coaster journey on Friday.
The day started off on a rough note as mechanical issues plagued Wickens’ Corvette, causing a lengthy delay during the morning practice session. Despite resolving the problems, Wickens struggled to find his rhythm on the track, feeling like a “nuisance” among other drivers with fully warmed tires.
Teammate Tommy Milner stepped in and set an impressive lap time, providing Wickens with a benchmark to strive for. Wickens acknowledged the support from Milner, highlighting the importance of having a reliable teammate to analyze data and improve performance.
Following a unique debrief outside the press room, Wickens made a stunning comeback in the second practice session, topping the timesheets with significantly improved lap times. However, his success was short-lived as a mishap during the session led to a red flag situation, costing him his fastest lap in qualifying.
Despite the setback, Wickens showcased his determination by posting competitive lap times during qualifying, securing the eighth spot in the GTD field. The rookie racer’s eventful day at the Long Beach Grand Prix proved to be a mix of highs and lows, setting the stage for an adrenaline-fueled weekend of racing action.
