Why Lewis Hamilton is Choosing Art Over Supercars: A New Passion Shapes the Champ’s Collection

Lewis Hamilton may be one of the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history, but he’s not following the trend of filling his garage with supercars. The seven-time champion, known for his massive achievements on the track, has revealed that his interest in collecting modern supercars has faded. Instead, Hamilton has shifted his passion—and spending—to the world of art, especially pieces from emerging and established Black artists.

Hamilton’s last supercar purchase was the coveted AMG Project One, a limited-edition model developed in partnership with Mercedes. The exclusive car came with a sky-high price tag, but since then, Hamilton’s enthusiasm for acquiring modern cars has waned. “The last car I bought was an AMG One, but it’s also my last supercar for the time being,” Hamilton said. “I’d rather spend my money on art now. I’m always discovering new artists, especially great Black artists.”

The 39-year-old driver’s choice reflects a critique of the current state of the auto industry. With manufacturers producing increasingly similar designs, Hamilton feels the uniqueness that once defined supercars is missing. “Modern cars all look a bit the same. It’s a bit sad,” he said. Instead, he’s drawn to classic cars for their distinct sound and emotional appeal, preferring them over the sleek but uniform designs of today.

Hamilton’s shift in interests aligns with his unique personality, one that team principal Toto Wolff praises highly. Wolff commends Hamilton’s resilience and talent, especially given the adversities he faced in his youth. “Lewis uses adversity and channels it into performance…that combined with his talent, hard work ethic, intelligence, no fear attitude, and constant development of himself makes him one-of-a-kind,” Wolff stated.

As Hamilton approaches the final stretch with Mercedes, he aims to end the season strong, though podiums may be hard to secure with the underperforming W15. Yet, his pursuit of excellence remains unshaken, both on the track and in his new artistic passion. With his sights set on new creative ventures, Hamilton’s collection may now tell a story of growth, resilience, and a love for art that rivals even his passion for racing.
