This year, Jenson Button returns to the biggest stages of motorsport, competing in the full season of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) in the top category – Hypercar. He joins the Hertz Team JOTA, where he will drive a Porsche 963 LMDh.
After stepping away, opting for sporadic participations and part-time projects, the 2009 Formula 1 world champion is now back to a full program. In an interview with the championship’s official website, he explained his motivations:
– Well, I’ve been competing since F1 – I competed in Super GT in Japan, I was in WEC in 2018. I’ve tried lots of different things… the Daytona 24 Hours as well, but you feel like you don’t maximize what you can achieve with sporadic races. And you don’t bring out the best in yourself by doing that. So, I wanted to do a full season. You don’t have many pre-season tests and I wanted to do a full season to see what we could achieve in WEC this year’.
About the Hertz Team JOTA, Button stated: ‘This is a fantastic opportunity with the Hertz Team JOTA. It’s a team that I’ve seen for several years and I have many friends who work for the team. It was such an exciting opportunity to compete in a championship that is one of the most competitive in motorsport right now… and to do it with a private team fighting against the big manufacturers is very exciting’.
