Waymo, the company owned by Alphabet, which also owns Google, announced that it plans to start testing autonomous vehicles in 10 new cities this year in the U.S., beginning with Las Vegas and San Diego.
After already testing the Waymo Driver in several cities, the company now announces that the technology is successfully adapting to new environments, and in this regard, it plans for its expansion.
To achieve this, Waymo will send about 10 autonomous vehicles to the new cities, which in the initial phase will be manually driven to gauge how the autonomous system adapts to the environmental conditions and traffic of the new cities.
Waymo already operates a robotaxi service in the cities of Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, and expects to reach Austin, Atlanta, and Miami this year. In 2024, the company tested its autonomous vehicles in Michigan and upstate New York to assess its technology under more severe winter conditions.
Additionally, Waymo announced last year that it will conduct tests with its robotaxis in Japan this year, marking the brand’s first trial of its autonomous driving models outside the U.S.
