Waymo has issued a software “recall” for 1,200 autonomous vehicles after some of its robotaxis recorded minor collisions with gates, chains, and other barriers on the roads.
“A vehicle that hits chains, gates, or other gate-like barriers increases the risk of injury,” states the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in a statement.
The recently announced “recall” affects Waymo vehicles equipped with the fifth-generation autonomous driving system and comes after an investigation opened a year ago by the NHTSA, which recorded 16 reports of “collisions with objects such as gates and chains” between December 2022 and 2024, with no injuries reported.
Currently, Waymo operates 1,500 commercial robotaxis in the U.S., in the cities of Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco.
