VW is committed to developing autonomous driving, and for that purpose has just announced a cooperation agreement with the technology company Mobileye.
The agreement now reached between Volkswagen ADMT, VW’s autonomous driving division, will allow Mobileye to develop and provide software, hardware components, and digital maps for the autonomous driving vehicle ID. Buzz AD.
The German brand mentioned that the essence of the agreement covers the delivery and use of a self-driving system (SDS) for a special version of the ID. Buzz, which has been in development for autonomous level 4 driving since 2021, meaning the vehicle is capable of operating without human intervention in a defined area, such as a city.
The SDS consists of various software and hardware components, including two independent high-performance computers, as well as 13 cameras, nine sensors, and five radar units, with each system capable of producing a 360-degree environment.
A permanent online connection provides autonomous vehicles with data from other road users about traffic conditions, while updating three-dimensional maps for safe, reliable, and efficient vehicle control.
Models of the VW ID. Buzz with this technology have been tested on roads in Germany as well as in the USA, and the German brand claims to be the first car manufacturer to develop a level 4 autonomous service vehicle for large-scale production.
The goal of VWADMT is to develop a fully electric autonomous vehicle ID. Buzz AD for use in mobility and transportation services, starting as early as 2026.
