VW is celebrating half a century since the launch of the small Polo, a model with over 20 million units sold worldwide.
To kick off the year of celebration for the 50th anniversary, VW will present a duo from the first generation at the Bremen Classic Motorshow, an event that will take place from January 30 to February 2, featuring a 1975 Polo L and a 1977 competition model used in hill climbs.
The first generation of the Polo that will be on display represents the beginning of the history of the small model from Wolfsburg. Small, functional, and with a simplified design, the model appears in Ocean Blue and showcases how the foundation for the Polo’s success story was established, measuring only 3.50 meters in length and equipped with an 895 cm3 engine producing 40 hp, far from the 95 hp provided by the 1.0-liter turbo engine that currently enters the lineup.
Next to the original 1975 version, there will be a competition version used in hill climbs in 1977 that impressively showcases the sporty DNA of the model.
This sporty version of the Polo features a wider and lowered appearance and was used as a competition model for about 20 years. After approximately two years of restoration, the refurbished unit returned to compete for the first time in 2022 at the Osnabrück hill climb, as part of the International Hill Climb Cup.
The unique model, based on a Polo I in Bali Green, has a displacement of 1,300 cm³, impressing with a power output of 110 hp and a top speed of around 150 km/h. It was also equipped with a shorter gear ratio and a roll cage for rollover protection, relevant for competitive use.
