The VW Group is engaging in negotiations with the U.S. administration to avoid trade conflicts after U.S. President Donald Trump announced the imposition of tariffs on imported products from Mexico, Canada, and China.
The VW factory in Puebla, Mexico, is one of the largest in the VW Group, producing around 350,000 vehicles in 2023, all for export to the U.S.
“We are assessing the potential effects of the newly announced tariffs on the automotive industry and our company,” VW said in a statement released by “Reuters” over the weekend.
“We are counting on constructive negotiations among trading partners to ensure planning security and economic stability and to avoid a trade conflict”, the statement concluded.
It should be noted that Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, as well as an additional 10% tax on Chinese products, with these new tariffs taking effect on Tuesday, February 4.
