VW celebrated the delivery of two million fully electric vehicles. The celebration took place at the Dresden factory, taking advantage of the fact that the buyer of the ID. 3, the protagonist of such an important milestone, resides in a city where the Wolfsburg brand has a factory.
The commemorative ID. 3, like all members of its range, was produced in Zwickau, also in Germany, at a facility that began manufacturing the model in November 2019, although the first units only reached customers in 2020. By early 2026, approximately 628,000 units of this compact family car had been sold.

However, for VW, the beginning of the electric adventure is much earlier. The manufacturer introduced the e-up! in 2013, and shortly thereafter, launched the e-Golf. Currently, in its European offering, there are four more models of this kind: ID.4, ID.5, ID.7, and ID.Buzz. In the manufacturer’s plans for 2026 and 2027, there are three more vehicles: ID. Polo, ID. Cross, and ID. EVERY1 – the third one does not yet have a definitive name, will only be available next year, and will be produced in Portugal, at Autoeuropa, in Palmela.
“We established the foundations for electric mobility very early on, and currently, we are driving our strategy towards an electric future. We have a very important position in the market, especially in Germany and Europe, which confirms the attractiveness and competitiveness of the products we manufacture”, says Martin Sander, Head of Sales, Marketing, and After-sales at VW.
Commercially, the most successful electric Volkswagen is the ID.4, an SUV that has already sold over 900,000 units, largely due to its trendy car format. The contribution of the “derivative” ID.5 (SUV-Coupé) to this total is not negligible, but they consider it to be insignificant, which is the reason behind the plan for its discontinuation. Finally, the ID.7 (including the ID.7 Tourer estate) accounted for around 132,000 deliveries to customers.
