In the journey towards carbon neutrality, the VW Poznań (VWP) factory, located in the Polish city of Września, where the VW Crafter is produced, operated entirely on solar energy for the first time on September 27th.
Taking advantage of ideal weather conditions, the solar plant located on the factory premises was able to supply 100% of the necessary electricity. The park is one of the largest of its kind in Europe, consisting of 25,000 modules with a capacity of 15.2 MW.
“The new photovoltaic plant at the Września factory is an important step towards total energy self-sufficiency, as well as for sustainable and environmentally friendly production”, said Stefanie Hegels, CEO of Volkswagen Poznań. “It also ensures that we have access to energy at stable prices.”
The solar plant was built in two phases: the first section became operational in 2023, while the second was recently completed in partnership with Quanta Energy. Covering an area of 22 hectares, the plant will meet about 20% of the VWP factory’s electricity demand in Września over the course of a year.
Remember that the brands of the VW Group have set the goal of achieving carbon-neutral production in all factories by 2040. The factories in Poland are playing a pioneering role in this process. All VW Poznań factories have been powered exclusively by green energy since 2019.
