Vowles: What’s not to like about having Sainz in your team?

The announcement came on Monday, following the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, that Sainz, a triple race winner, had signed a contract with Williams for the years 2025 and 2026, with the possibility of extension.

Vowles, speaking to reporters on a video call on Tuesday, expressed his high regard for Sainz, considering him one of the top four drivers, and even at times, the second best driver on the grid. He emphasized the value of having such talent in the team.

Looking at Sainz’s track record, Vowles noted significant improvements in every team he has been a part of. Having spent the last nine months in constant communication with Sainz, Vowles recognized him as a performance-driven individual who not only transforms himself but also elevates the team around him.

If given the chance, Vowles would have Sainz alongside Max Verstappen, the triple F1 World Champion, instead of Sergio Perez at Red Bull. McLaren’s recent progress has been chipping away at Red Bull’s advantage in the standings.

Mercedes is expected to prioritize youth and is likely to replace seven-time F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton with young Italian talent, Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

Discussions between Vowles and Sainz began well before Hamilton’s decision to join Ferrari in 2025. The process was a rollercoaster ride, involving secret meetings in various hotel rooms worldwide.

Vowles disclosed that he presented Sainz with a transparent outlook, highlighting both the positives and negatives of the project. He explained the team’s plans, investments, and reasons for excitement, leaving the decision in Sainz’s hands.

Currently, Williams holds the ninth position out of the ten teams in the constructors’ standings.

Despite interest from Sauber, who will transition to Audi in 2026, and Renault-owned Alpine, Sainz ultimately chose Williams. Sauber ranks last, while Alpine is struggling in eighth place.

Vowles expressed immense pride in securing Sainz’s signature, beating out two manufacturers in the process. However, the negotiations kept him on edge throughout.

The details of the contract are known only to ten individuals, making media reports about exit clauses mere speculation. Sainz is fully committed to Williams. (Reporting by Alan Baldwin)
