The Volvo 240 is, probably, the most iconic model from the Swedish brand, despite its angular and conservative shapes that did not prevent it from becoming a reference in the automotive industry.
Volvo Cars unveiled the 240 to the world in 1974, a model that quickly became iconic for its classic angular design. Although some described it as a “boxy” model, the truth is that this aesthetic choice was not made by chance.
However, in line with the essential pillar of the Swedish brand, safety had been an extremely important factor for Volvo for 50 years, and therefore, the elongated hood and rear were not just cost-effective design decisions, but also deliberate choices to enhance passenger safety.
These features allowed for the integration of innovations such as crumple zones and large bumpers, specifically designed to absorb the kinetic energy of collisions, thus providing greater protection to occupants.
The exterior design was also a reference point at the time of the Volvo 240’s launch, as the flat surfaces were ingeniously crafted to maximize interior space.
This design provided ample legroom for both the driver and passengers, along with a large trunk, making the 240 a benchmark family model.
Volvo produced the 240 series for 19 years, ending in 1993. Thirty-one years after the end of this historic model’s production, the 240 remains a highly regarded and sought-after vehicle to this day.
