Volkswagen made waves at IAA Transportation 2024 in Hanover with the much-anticipated debut of the T7 generation Transporter and Caravelle. These all-new models, now on display until September 22, bring significant advancements in powertrain variety, space, and efficiency to Volkswagen’s iconic van lineup. After their online reveal in early August, the duo has finally hit the public eye.
The latest Transporter and Caravelle mark the completion of Volkswagen’s van range, which already includes the Multivan and California camper, alongside the all-electric ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo. The T7 models feature not only diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains but also fully electric options. Volkswagen has touted improvements across the board, from increased payload capacity to a stronger trailer weight limit, emphasizing the new models’ superior economic efficiency.
Celebrating 75 years since the introduction of the original T1, the T7 generation unifies the brand’s van offerings under the “Bulli” banner. This includes commercial-focused Transporter models and the Caravelle, aimed at shuttle and minibus services. Customers will have various configurations to choose from, such as panel vans, crew buses, and even a double cab with an extended wheelbase for extra cargo space.
The nine-seat Caravelle and the Transporter also come in a rugged new PanAmericana all-terrain version, catering to both city transportation and off-road needs. Notably, the T7 offers up to 9 square meters of stowage space and a payload capacity increase of 0.13 tons, reaching 1.33 tons. Additionally, the maximum braked trailer weight has jumped by 0.3 tons to a robust 2.8 tons.
Powertrain options include three diesel engines (TDIs) with outputs ranging from 110 PS to 170 PS, and an optional eight-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel-drive capabilities (4Motion) for the higher-output variants. For eco-conscious drivers, the eHybrid PHEV produces an impressive 232 PS. On the electric front, the e-Transporter and e-Caravelle boast 64-kWh batteries with three power options: 136 PS, 218 PS, and a potent 286 PS.
Volkswagen’s renewed lineup of Transporter and Caravelle vans reinforces the brand’s commitment to versatility, innovation, and efficiency, aiming to meet the diverse needs of commercial, recreational, and urban transportation markets.
