Volkswagen Teases €20,000 Electric Car—Will the ID.1 Be the People’s EV?

Volkswagen is doubling down on affordability in the EV market, officially previewing its most budget-friendly electric car yet. Expected to launch in 2027 at a starting price of €20,000 ($20,800), this entry-level EV could be the true electric successor to the Volkswagen Beetle and Golf, bringing EVs to the masses like never before.

While the official name remains under wraps, Volkswagen has filed a trademark for “ID.EVERY1”, which could be the concept name—or even a hint that the final model will be called ID.1.

🔥 Full unveiling? Set for early March 2025!

A Cheaper, Smaller Sibling to the ID.2all

Volkswagen previously introduced the ID.2all concept, a €25,000 electric car that previewed the brand’s push for affordability. The upcoming ID.1 (or ID.EVERY1) will be even cheaper and smaller, bringing Volkswagen’s MEB Small platform to a new audience.

✔️ Based on the same platform as the ID.2
✔️ Primarily front-wheel drive
✔️ Expected to offer a competitive WLTP range
✔️ Fast-charging capabilities like the ID.2all (10-80% in 20 minutes)

VW’s Push for the Most Affordable European EV

Volkswagen originally planned to co-develop the ID.1 with Renault, but the collaboration fell apart, with Renault moving forward independently on the reborn electric Twingo—set to launch in 2026 for around €20,000.

VW isn’t backing down, though. CEO Thomas Schäfer hyped the project during a company meeting in Wolfsburg, stating:

“An affordable, high-quality, and profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe—that’s the Champions League of automotive engineering!”

Can Volkswagen Dominate the Affordable EV Market?

🔹 Volkswagen’s challenge? Making a €20,000 EV profitable without cutting corners.
🔹 The competition? Renault’s electric Twingo in 2026, as well as potential future budget EVs from Stellantis, Hyundai, and BYD.
🔹 The goal? Make EVs accessible for millions while meeting Europe’s stringent emissions targets.

If VW pulls this off, it could be the biggest game-changer in the EV market yet, bringing the electric revolution to the same price bracket as today’s entry-level combustion cars.

🚀 Full reveal coming March 2025—stay tuned!
