The 'R' has always stood for Racing. And in 2027, Volkswagen will prove that this legacy has not been lost. The German brand has just confirmed the return of the Golf R to endurance competition, with participation in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring that will coincide with the 25th anniversary of the R lineage, inaugurated in 2002 with the legendary Golf R32. To make this return even more special, Volkswagen revealed a show car called Golf R 24h that anticipates the visual and technical direction of the ultimate racing car, developed in partnership with the Max Kruse Racing team.

The visual impact is immediate and unmistakable. This is not the Golf R that you buy at the dealership. The show car features a massive front splitter that scrapes the asphalt, a ventilated hood, fender flares that make the car look like it swallowed two extra sizes, a rear wing of dramatic proportions mounted over the rear window, and a custom diffuser. The setup sits significantly lower than the production model and is fitted with competition wheels with slick tires. The visual similarities with the Golf GTI Clubsport 24h are evident, which makes sense given that the team and platform are shared. However, the final version of the racing car may still evolve significantly during the development process before its track debut next year.

The most important change compared to its predecessor is not visible, but it is felt. Unlike the GTI Clubsport 24h, which used front-wheel drive, the Golf R 24h adopts all-wheel drive, bringing it philosophically closer to the production hot hatch. This decision is anything but random. The Golf R is defined precisely by its four-wheel drive as a distinguishing element compared to the GTI, and it would be a contradiction to enter a 24-hour race with a car that did not share this fundamental identity trait with the road version.

In terms of technical specifications, Volkswagen is still keeping most details a secret. The car is expected to use a more extreme version of the familiar 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine. In the GTI Clubsport 24h that it now replaces, this engine produced 343 hp and ran on E20 biofuel. What the brand has not yet revealed is the class in which it intends to compete, nor the definitive power figures. There is also speculation in the industry about the possibility of this project being linked to a final street Golf R with a five-cylinder engine, a sort of special farewell edition before the R brand transitions to the electric SSP architecture that will support the ninth generation of the Golf.

Reinhold Ivenz, head of Volkswagen R, described the 24 Hours of Nürburgring as the most demanding test in real competition conditions, adding that the new car promises to be the most spectacular Golf R ever created. Ivenz went further in the official statement: “The Nürburgring is also our testing and development track, and we will find at the event people who share our passion for performance, which is why this project is a perfect fit for Volkswagen R.”

The choice of Max Kruse Racing as a development partner is not a surprise. The team already has three seasons of experience competing on the same circuit with the Golf GTI Clubsport 24h, knows every meter of the Nordschleife layout, and has an established working relationship with the engineers from Wolfsburg. Benjamin Leuchter, co-founder of the team, is leading the development program for the new racing car.

The sporting history of Volkswagen R justifies all the ambition of this project. The brand has won four titles in the World Rally Championship with the Polo R WRC and set several records with the electric prototype ID.R in 2018 and 2019. The return to Nürburgring in 2027 is not just a celebration of the past. It is a statement that Volkswagen R still has much to show before fully embracing the electric era. The show car will already be present at this year's 24 Hours of Nürburgring in May, so fans can see live what is coming. The actual race, however, is set for 2027.
