Villeneuve Warns: Hamilton’s Mindset Must Shift Before Ferrari Move

As Lewis Hamilton faces one of his toughest seasons yet, former F1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve has sounded an alarm: the seven-time champion’s mindset needs serious attention if he hopes to succeed at Ferrari. Hamilton’s recent struggles continued at the US Grand Prix, where an early spin and race-ending exit capped a disappointing weekend. After a surprising Q1 elimination left him starting from 17th, Hamilton made early gains, reaching 12th by lap one, but a spin-off at Turn 19 dashed his race hopes by lap three.

Hamilton attributed his struggles to balance and handling issues, challenges that have plagued his 2024 season with Mercedes’ inconsistent performance. But Villeneuve, renowned for his candid insights, believes the issue is deeper: “He’s not thinking about Ferrari right now; he’s thinking about himself and how things are falling apart. It’s affecting his driving.”

Hamilton’s recent performances support Villeneuve’s view. His season low points began well before Austin, with a sixth-place finish in Singapore and a ninth in Azerbaijan, where he even battled rookie drivers. While the British driver managed wins at Silverstone and Spa, the overall season has been challenging, with only sporadic highs. Villeneuve remarked, “Three weeks off and no improvement—he’s not bouncing back with the same fire.”

According to Villeneuve, Hamilton’s mindset and body language no longer show the “killer instinct” of his winning days. Racing at nearly 40, he’s carrying the heavy weight of pressure and expectations, and Villeneuve believes these could hinder him at Ferrari. “Ferrari demands excellence. If Hamilton arrives there still weighed down, it could backfire on his legacy,” he warned.

For Hamilton, Ferrari offers an opportunity for fresh glory, but with Villeneuve’s advice clear: to thrive in the Scuderia, Hamilton must rekindle the fierce competitive spirit that once defined him. Anything less risks undermining his storied achievements, as Ferrari is unforgiving when it comes to unmet expectations.
