Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari Debut Faces Weather Challenges: Plan B in Motion

Jacques Villeneuve believes Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari for the 2025 Formula 1 season could ignite another championship-winning chapter for the seven-time world champion, emphasizing Hamilton’s physical fitness and hunger to succeed.

A new Ferrari chapter for Hamilton

At 40 years old, Hamilton is set to embark on a new journey with Ferrari on a multi-year deal extending until at least 2026. Villeneuve, the 1997 F1 World Champion, believes Hamilton has the physical condition to continue racing for up to a decade, likening him to Fernando Alonso, who remains competitive at 43.

“Physically, there’s no issue. He’s super fit, super strong. He can go on for another 10 years without a problem,” Villeneuve told reporters.

Hunger for success

Villeneuve noted that Hamilton’s longevity in the sport hinges on his desire to win, particularly his aspiration to secure a championship with Ferrari.

“It depends if Lewis has the same hunger as Alonso. He still wants one more championship, and he wants it with Ferrari. That should be enough to keep him motivated,” Villeneuve explained.

Ferrari’s recent resurgence—coming close to a Constructors’ Championship in 2024—positions Hamilton as a key piece in their quest for a long-awaited title.

A partnership with Leclerc

Villeneuve expects Hamilton’s partnership with Charles Leclerc to be one of the most fascinating dynamics on the grid in 2025. Ferrari’s strategy, he said, will create a win-win scenario regardless of the internal rivalry.

“There’s a big image happening with Ferrari pushing Lewis right now. If he’s pushed and it’s amazing, great. If not, it will pump Leclerc up. Either way, Ferrari benefits,” Villeneuve remarked.

He predicted that Hamilton’s expertise and determination could propel Ferrari to its first championship since 2007.

Hamilton’s crossroads

While Hamilton’s physical condition is unquestionable, Villeneuve highlighted the mental challenges of staying motivated in a sport as demanding as Formula 1.

“If the going gets tough, will he stay and fight like Alonso, or decide it’s time to do something else? That’s what it all depends on. It’s not about his body; it’s about his mind and desire,” Villeneuve said.

Ferrari’s resurgence: A motivating factor

Ferrari’s near-miss in 2024, where they narrowly lost to McLaren in the Constructors’ Championship, is a motivating factor for Hamilton’s move. The Briton brings unparalleled experience and a proven track record of extracting maximum performance from his team.

Villeneuve believes Ferrari’s championship drought, which has lasted over 15 years, could end with Hamilton’s arrival. “Lewis could have a shot at it. He finished on a high note, and it will be an interesting battle between him and Leclerc.”

A decade of potential

As Hamilton prepares for this new chapter, Villeneuve’s assessment underscores the Briton’s remarkable physical and mental resilience. Whether Hamilton races for another decade or decides to transition out of the sport, his Ferrari tenure could define the latter stages of his illustrious career.
