The Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix seemed destined to be a battle between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris for the victory, but in the last ten laps, the two collided and were out of contention.
On the 64th of the 71 laps, Norris (McLaren/Mercedes) attempted an overtaking maneuver on the outside, and Verstappen (Red Bull) closed the door on him, not giving any space or chance to avoid the collision. In fact, they collided at two different moments.
The damage to the British driver’s McLaren meant that he had to retire, while the Dutchman managed to continue despite puncturing the right rear tire. He finished fifth and was also penalized ten seconds for the incident.
As a result, George Russell (Mercedes), who was in third place, inherited the lead and secured his first victory of the season, and the first for Mercedes since the Brazilian Grand Prix in 2022.
