VIDEO – Tensions Boil Over: Sergio Pérez Blasts Engineer Over Costly Abu Dhabi Qualifying Error

Sergio Pérez’s frustration with Red Bull reached a boiling point during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix qualifying session, as the Mexican driver lashed out at his race engineer, Hugh Bird, over a mismanaged track limits review that cost him a crucial set of fresh tyres.

A Costly Miscommunication in Q1

Pérez’s frustrations began in Q1, when his initial lap of 1:23.559 was deleted for exceeding track limits. Seeking clarity, Pérez immediately asked Bird to review the decision. The request went unaddressed, forcing Pérez to push for another fast lap using a fresh set of soft tyres.

Moments later, Bird informed Pérez that his original lap time had been reinstated. The update came too late, leaving the Guadalajara native livid.

“I told you, man! Why the f*** don’t you check it? We’re missing a set [of tyres],” Pérez shouted over team radio, his frustration evident.

More Frustration in Q3

The tension continued in Q3, where Pérez found himself at odds with the team’s strategy. Sent out for his final flying lap ahead of the rest of the field, the move backfired as other drivers capitalized on evolving track conditions. Pérez was left in 10th place, capping off another frustrating session.

Season-Long Tensions Reach a Climax

This latest incident underscores the growing strain in Pérez’s relationship with Red Bull as the season comes to a close. With his future role in the team still under discussion for 2025, the missteps in Abu Dhabi highlight the ongoing struggles within the garage.

Pérez’s frustrations reflect a difficult 2024 campaign, where inconsistent performances and strategic miscommunications have kept him in the shadow of teammate Max Verstappen. While Verstappen secured his fourth consecutive Drivers’ Championship, Pérez’s qualifying struggles and race-day woes have left him searching for consistency.

What’s Next for Pérez?

The tension between Pérez and Red Bull looms large heading into the offseason, where the team is expected to define roles and priorities for 2025. With speculation swirling about Pérez’s long-term future at Red Bull, the fallout from Abu Dhabi’s missteps could add pressure to an already delicate situation.

As the final race of the season approaches, Pérez remains focused on salvaging points and ending the year on a positive note. However, the growing friction within the team signals that discussions about 2025 may be just as contentious as his season on the track.
