VIDEO – RAFAEL’s Spike ER2: A Game-Changer in Modern Missile Systems

RAFAEL Advanced Defense Systems has unveiled a significant leap in missile technology with the Spike ER2, following its first-ever firing demonstration from an H145M helicopter. This cutting-edge 5th generation electro-optical (EO) guided missile has proven its versatility and effectiveness, particularly in close air support missions, like the simulated high-stakes hostage rescue conducted during the demo. The operation showcased how the Spike ER2, integrated with the H145M’s HForce weapon system, can provide real-time firepower to neutralize armored threats, ensuring mission success for special operations forces.

Spike ER2: Key Features and Capabilities

The Spike ER2 is the latest evolution of RAFAEL’s well-established Spike missile series, offering advanced precision targeting across multiple platforms—land, air, and sea. The missile’s standout feature is its extended range, capable of striking targets between 10 and 16 kilometers, all while maintaining a lightweight design of just 34 kg. This adaptability allows it to be deployed on various platforms, including helicopters, ground vehicles, and naval vessels, giving military forces unmatched tactical flexibility.

The missile’s tandem-charge high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warhead is optimized for penetrating armored vehicles, while its Penetration-Blast-Fragmentation (PBF) warhead makes it equally effective against hardened structures like bunkers. Additionally, the Spike ER2 can engage targets both in direct line-of-sight (LOS) and beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) scenarios, including non-line-of-sight (NLOS) engagements, a key advantage in dynamic and complex battlefield environments.

Operational Flexibility and Resilience

One of the Spike ER2’s most impressive attributes is its multi-mode operational flexibility. The system offers three primary modes of operation—“Fire & Forget,” “Fire & Observe,” and “Fire to Target Coordinates.” These modes allow operators to adjust to changing conditions mid-mission, enhancing real-time decision-making. The missile’s resilience in electronic warfare is further bolstered by its immunity to radio frequency (RF) and GPS jamming, making it a reliable tool in contested environments where electronic interference is common.

At the core of its operational superiority is the Spike ER2’s real-time fiber-optic and RF data links, which enable “Man-in-the-Loop” control for surface and rotary-wing platforms. This allows operators to adjust targeting while the missile is in-flight, ensuring maximum effectiveness against both static and mobile targets. The missile’s multispectral seeker, equipped with high-resolution infrared and day sensors, further enhances its ability to track and engage targets in any weather or lighting conditions.

Widespread Adoption and Integration

The Spike ER2’s capabilities have already been recognized globally, with the system integrated into more than 45 platforms and operational in 43 armed forces worldwide. Its proven track record highlights its reliability in diverse environments, from desert battlefields to maritime theaters. Notably, the missile’s low Life Cycle Cost (LCC) and minimal maintenance requirements make it an attractive choice for military forces seeking cost-effective, high-performance solutions.

The Future of Tactical Precision

RAFAEL’s Spike ER2 represents a monumental advancement in missile technology, combining long-range precision, adaptability across multiple domains, and robust performance in electronic warfare environments. Whether deployed for air support, naval operations, or ground combat, the Spike ER2 provides armed forces with a critical edge in modern warfare, ensuring they can meet the challenges of increasingly complex threats with confidence.

As militaries worldwide continue to enhance their capabilities, the Spike ER2 stands as a testament to the future of tactical precision and operational flexibility, offering unmatched performance in a rapidly evolving battlefield landscape.
